Garth Brooks Explores Trisha Yearwood’s Growth as a Songwriter on ’The Mirror'

The Mirror, available Friday, July 18, marks a new chapter for Trisha Yearwood, one that showcases her vulnerability and growth as a songwriter and artist.

In this four-part series, Garth Brooks will share his professional thoughts on Trisha's new album. For part one, the Songwriters Hall of Famer explores his wife's growth as a songwriter.

Question: This is Trisha's first time co-writing an entire album. Did you always know she was such a thoughtful and accomplished songwriter?

Garth: Her writing has always been there. It took writers she respected, like Leslie Satcher, telling her she should write. Once she finally started, she couldn't stop. She wrote non-stop over the last two years. Her passion for writing was a beautiful reminder to me of why I got into writing in the first place.

Question: After Trisha invested herself in writing the album, what was her learning process like?

Garth: Her learning curve has always been accelerated in everything she chooses to chase, but I am really impressed with how quickly she is jumping to each new stage of songwriting. She is already realizing we are not writers; we are rewriters. You back up and run over that line again and again until it speaks as if it were a conversation.

Question: How quickly did Trisha transition from being a singer to a singer/songwriter?

Garth: She stepped into the artist/songwriter role quickly. She realizes an artist must make the song 'them' for it to be believable and relatable. I hear so much of her in her writing, and I believe that is what the fans want. I believe the fan wants to KNOW their artist, and Trisha delivers that on this album.

Trisha is days away from releasing The Mirror, her first new album in six years – and the first studio project in her career that she co-wrote and co-produced
